PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of coordinate comparison operation for every segment to enhance the processing speed of the device, by checking whether segments of different scanning lines belong to the same pattern or not in hardware of a connection information counter etc. CONSTITUTION:Plural patterns 301 are scanned with rasters by a TV camera 302, and the image pickup signal is made binary by a binary circuit 303 and is supplied successively to a two-dimensional local memory 304 where many elements are arranging spirally and is shifted between continuous elements. The signal from this memory 304 is supplied to hardware of a memory write signal generating circuit 306, a segment number counter 309, a beginning information extracting circuit 311, a joining information extracting circuit 312, etc. The circuit 311 detects whether the current segment overlaps a segment of the preceding scanning or not and checks whether beginning information exists or not; and if this information is not added, segment information is referred to, thereby reducing the quantity of coordinate operation for every segment to take information into an RAM316 and a microcomputer 316.
