Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled pigment useful for coloring a film, etc., having improved dispersibility, by adding a basic aqueous solution and an anion exchange resin to an aqueous solution of ferric salt, adjusting the solution to a specific pH, to give a transparent ultrafine hydrated iron oxide sol.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably basic aqueous solution (e.g., ammonia water) is an aqueous solution of ferric salt, which is adjusted to a pH of 1W4, to give a transparent hydrated iron oxide sol having particle diameters of preferably ≤100Å at an adjusting temperature of ≤60°C. An anionic surface active agent (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate) is added to the sol, so that the particles of hydrated iron oxide are once agglomerated. A water-insoluble organic solvent (e.g., toluene) is added to the sol, the sol is shaked vigorously, the ultrafine particles of hydrated iron oxide are transferred and dispersed into the organic solvent, the organosol separated from water is evaporated and refluxed at the boiling point of the organic solvent to remove water, to give a transparent pasty or powdery pigment of iron oxide.
