CONSTITUTION:A backboard 8 with which recording paper 1 is allowed to contact has almost the same curvature as that of a side surface 14. A chopped signal with a frequency repeatedly changing as time elapses is applied to a transducer 12 when letters are printed, so that a luminous point on the side surface 14 of a photodeflector 6 is scanned at high speed in the direction of an arrow C. At this time, a semiconductor laser 10 is turned ON and OFF on receiving a character dot signal from a character generator. Since dot density can be made greater by the photodeflector 6, the resolution of a character into hundreds of dots is readily provided.
