PURPOSE:To calculate the proportion of cracked grains automatically with high precision, by detecting the variance of the quantity of a light transmitting through a grain by plural photodetectors and calculating the number of cracked grains and the total number of grains on the basis of the variance of the image pattern and the grain detection signal of a specific photodetector. CONSTITUTION:A reference brightness of the central transparent part of a sample grain is set to setting equipments 15 provided in comparators 17a-17n of a counter circuit 13 for cracked grains, and a prescribed voltage corresponding to a brightness for discriminating the background and grains from each other is set to a setting equipment 28 of a comparator 27 on the side of a counter circuit 14 for the number of grains. When the same grain passes through a slit part of the light transmitting window of the bottom part of a conduit from a supply hopper, the transmitted light is magnified and is projected onto the photodetecting face of a photodetector 9.
