Abstract

PURPOSE:To give many display functions to one liquid crystal display element without generating the deviation due to the direction of view by giving a multilayer structure through insulating layers only to electrodes provided on upper and lower plates and inputting signals to respective electrodes independently of each other. CONSTITUTION:The first pair of electrode patterns 1a and 1b are provided on main faces facing to each other of two parallel glass substrates 3a and 3b, and the second pair of electrode patterns 1c and 1d are provided through insulating layers 5a and 5b consisting of SiO2 or the like on them, and orientation treatment faces 2a and 2b are formed on faces where patterns 1c and 1d are provided, and torsional orientation is given to a liquid crystal 4 charged between these faces 2a and 2b. Thus, since only electrode patterns are duplicate and only insulating layers are added, the element is thinner in comparison with the case wherein the duplicate structure is given to the whole of the element including the liquid crystal layer and glass substrates, and the deviation due to the difference of height of the liquid crystal layer is not generated because of only one liquid crystal layer.
