Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase both the mechanical strength and the reliability of the connected part, by heating the surface of a naked optical fiber part with the coat removed for the melt-sticking and connection and removing the flaws on the surface of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber core wires 10 and 10' at both sides of a connected part 1 are held into grooves 16 and 16' where holding fitments 11 and 11' of a heating and polishing device 6 are set in an arc form. Then light shielding plates 12 and 12' are attached to a bed 7 so that coated ends 17 and 17' of glass parts 4 and 4' are put into U-shaped grooves 18 and 18'. Thereafter, a CO2 laser 13 is set so that a laser beam 15 touches the end 17 of the part 4. A mobile mechanism part 14 is driven simultaneously with the emission of the beam 15. Thus the laser 13 moves toward the shaft of the part 1 to successively heat the parts 4 and 4' to melt the surfaces of these glass parts. Thus the flaws on the surface can be removed by the function of the viscid fluid and the surface tension. As a result, the reliability is increased for the connected part.
