Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the weight of a push rod and the inertia of a valve motion system by making a rod body of a carbon fiber reinforced resin material while a rod end is made of a ceramic material. CONSTITUTION:A rod body 1 of a rod is made of a carbon fiber reinforced resin material with a specific gravity of 1.7 or so having a high strength and a high elasticity while rod ends 2, 3 are made of a ceramic material having a coefficient of thermal expansion of, for example, 6X10<6>/ deg.C or so and a specific gravity of about 3.0. The rod ends 2, 3 have recesses 23, 33 formed in stem portions 22, 32 thereof, respectively, and end edges of metal pipes 42 are engaged in the recesses 23, 33 of the rod ends 2, 3 by caulking. By this construction, a push rod can be designed to have a significantly reduced weight and to have remarkably improved performances thereof against jumps and bounds accompanying the speed up of an engine.
