Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The 2, 2-dimethy1-5-( 1'-hydroxy-1' -methy1-2'-propen )-yl-tetrahydrofuran of formula.
USE: A perfumery component having characteristic flavor suggesting hay, compoundable to various perfumery composition and exhibiting excellent effect, and easily synthesizable from industrially available raw materials.
PROCESS: The compound of formula can be prepared, easily by reacting ocimenol with an organic peracid such as peracetic acid, metachloroperbenzoic acid, etc. When the compound is added to a compounded perfumery composed mainly of linalool or linalool acetate in an amount of about 0.1%, the scent of the compounded perfumery approaches remarkably to the natural one, and the compound exhibits excellent effects in the preparation of a synthetic essential oil such as lavender, lavandine, bergamot, geranium, etc. The ocimenol used as the raw material is easily available industrially from commercially available ocimenyl acetate.
