PURPOSE:To improve reliability by separately recording and reproducing encoded data information and timing clock information before and after a magnetic stripe which has more than one track. CONSTITUTION:On tracks 12a and 12b of the magnetic stripe 12 of a magnetic card 11, data information and timing clock information encoded by a magnetic head for two tracks are recorded. In this case, the data information is recorded in front areas 12a' and 12b', and the timing clock information is also recorded in rear areas 12a'' and 12b'' of the card 11. A magnetic head 13 dedicated to reading is arranged near the insertion opening of a case 15, and a magnetic head 13 dedicated to recording is arranged at an inner part. When the magnetic card 11 is inserted into a device, the contents of new and old data in the front areas 12a' and 12b' are discriminated, the magnetic card 11 is inserted into the inner part, and a switch 16 is operated; then when the magnetic card 11 is drawn out, the timing clock synchronizes with the running speed of the magnetic card 11 to record new data in the front areas 12a' and 12b'.
