Abstract
PURPOSE: To increase the mechanical strength by passing a hot glass fiber through a powder fluidizing vessel holding powder nade of thermosetting resin to stick resin powder to the fiber surface, melting the powder by heating, and solidifying the molten resin.
CONSTITUTION: A hot glass fiber 2 immediately after spinning a mother rod 1 for a glass fiber for optical communication is passed through a powder fluidizing vessel 6 holding fluidized powder 3 of a primary coating agent made of thermosetting resin. Resin powder 3 sticks to the surface of the fiber 2 by the heat of spinning. The fiber 2 is then passed through a heating furnace 5 to melt the resin powder 3, and the molten resin is solidified on the surface of the fiber 2. The resulting fiber is coiled around a coiling roll 4.
