Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce both the transmission time and the communication cost, by changing the format information including a picture into a simplified code to assuredly compress the transmission information. CONSTITUTION:A format code 1a of a transmitted original 1 is recognized by a recognizing circuit 5 under the control of a control circuit 6 and then converted into the format information at a signal processing circuit 9. Based on this format information, the original is scanned through a main scanning mechanism 3 and a secondary scanning drive circuit 7 to recognize the character code as well as to read the picture signal. The read information is held in a line memory 4 and then changed into a character code to be stored in a memory 16. This character code is transmitted to a subscriber line 11 via the circuit 9. On the other hand, the information received from the line 11 is stored in the memory 16, and then the code 1a is changed into the format information through the circuit 9. At the same time, a code conversion is carried out by a conversion table 12 in case the received character code group is identical with the simplified character code. Then the converted code is applied to the circuit 6 via a pattern memory 13 to be received and recorded by a recording mechanism 14.
