Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a cyclopentadiene polymer at good thermal efficiency, by combining temperature-controlling means in a polymn. stage and in a separation stage.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclopentadine monomer (which may be used together with comonomer, an inert solvent, etc.) is introduced through a pipe 1, a controlling tank 2 and a pipe 3 into a polymerizer 4 where the monomer is polymerized (a polymn. stage). The resulting polymer solution is fed through a pipe 5 to a flash tank 6, and easily volatile components are distilled off through a pipe 7 (a first separation stage). Then a mixture of a polymer component and difficulty volatile component is fed through a pipe 10 to a thin-film evaporator 11. The difficulty volatile components are distilled off through a pipe 12, and the polymer component is recovered through a pipe 15 (a second separation stage). Heat transfer medium, which is supplied through a pipe 21 to the polymerizer 4, is heated by the heat of polymn. reaction, is supplied through pipes 22, 23 to the thin-film evaporator 11 and used as a heat source thereof. Then the cooled heat transfer medium is recycled through pipes 26, 27 and 21 to the polymerizer 4. The heat balance can be adjusted by using heat exchangers 25, 28 provided in the passage of the heat transfer medium.
