Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title copolymer consisting of rubber elastomer particles having various particle sizes, by dissolving a rubber elastomer in a W/O type emulsion of an alkenyl aromatic monomer, inverting said emulsion to an O/W type and mixing a rubber elastomer emulsion of a specific particle size therewith.
CONSTITUTION: A W/O emulsion is obtd. by adding 30W10pts.wt. water to 70W 90pts.wt. alkenyl aromatic monomer (e.g. styrene) or a mixt. thereof with a monomer copolymerizable therewith[e.g. (meth)acrylonitrile]by using an oil- soluble emulsifier (pref. an anionic emulsifier). Next 10W30pts.wt. rubber elastomer (e.g. polybutadiene or SBR) is dissolved in the above emulsion in such a way that the sum of said monomer or its mixt. and the rubber elastomer accounts for 100pts.wt. Subsequently 60W160pts.wt. water is added to the above mixt. to invert to an O/W type emulsion, and finally a rubber elastomer emulsion of wt.-average particle size 0.15W0.3μm is mixed with the resulting emulsion to give the titled copolymer.
