Abstract
PURPOSE: Copolymer particles capable of forming foams excellent in heat resistance and impact resistance, prepared by copolymerizing a major component consisting of methyl methacrylate with a minor component consisting of α- methylstyrene and, in addition, a specified third component.
CONSTITUTION: Foamable polymethyl methacrylate copolymer particles, glass transition point ≥110°C, containing a blowing agent prepared by suspension- polymerizing a vinyl compound mixture consisting of (A) 50W78wt% methyl methacrylate, (B) 20W45wt% vinyl aromatic compound consisting mainly of α- methylstyrene and (C) 2W5wt% vinyl compound, other than methyl methacrylate, obtained by reacting a 1W18C aliphatic alcohol with (meth)acrylic acid. The addition of component C facilitates impregnation of the copolymer particles with the blowing agent. This, in turn, prevents the infiltrated blowing agent from volatilizing out of the copolymer particles. Foams obtained from the copolymer particles have an advantage of being excellent in heat resistance.
