Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a powdered copolymer having excellent powder characteristics, narrow MW distribution and high shock resistance, by copolymerizing ethylene with an α-olefin in the presence of a combination of a preliminari- ly polymerized polyethylene contg.-solid catalyst and an organo metallic compd.
CONSTITUTION: One mol of Ti or V compd. and 0.05W50mol of organo magnesium compd. soluble in a hydrocarbon solvent are reacted at below 150°C in a hydrocarbon solvent to give a solid catalyst (A). Next, 0.1W500g ethylene per 1g of A is polymerized in the presence of A at 20W100°C under a pressure below 40kg/cm2 to give a solid catalyst (B). Subsequently 1g of component B is combined with 500W0.5mmol of organo metallic compd. (e.g. trialkylaluminum), and ethylene and 3W20C a-olefin are copolymerized in such a way that the component B accounts for 15wt% or less of the total copolymer to give powdered copolymer having 0.910W0.945 density and 0.001W300 MI.
