PURPOSE:To record and reproduce an audio signal without reference to a tape speed by recording an audio signal, processed through the time compression of an audio-signal head, at the widthwise edge part of a magnetic tape separately from a video signal recording zone, and reproducing the audio signal, processed by time compression, by time enlarging. CONSTITUTION:A rotary head cylinder 1 is provided with video-signal magnetic heads A and B, and an audio-signal magnetic head C at different height from the heads A and B in a cylinder rotary-shaft direction, and the heads A and B record a video signal on a magnetic tape for actual time. Then, the head C records an audio signal, processed by time compression 8, at the widthwise edge part of the tape 2 separately from a video-signal recording zone. For reproduction, the time-compressed audio signal reproduced by the head C is processed by time expansion 12 to obtain a reproduced audio signal, and heads A and B reproduce the video signal.
