Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an aqueous solution type thickening agent in which storage stability is improved and changes in viscosity with time are prevented, by a method wherein an emulsion of a carboxyl group-contg. polymer is made soluble in water by using an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: An emulsion of a polymer having carboxyl groups in the molecule such as a copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid wih styrene is neutralized with ammonia or an alkali metal hydroxide such as NaOH to obtain a water-solubilized material. The titled thickening agent is obtd. by blending a reducing sulfate salt such as Na2SO3 and/or a water-soluble antioxidant such as sodium erythorbate with said water-solubilized material. Alternatively, the titled thickening agent consists of a water-solubilized material obtd. by neutralizing said emulsion with an alkali such as isopropylamine to a pH of 9W12. This thickening agent has excellent storage stability, and does not suffer from changes in viscosity with time.
