Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a sugar alcohol useful as a food additive, industriual raw material, and raw material of pharmaceuticals, in high purity, by the thermal reaction of an aqueous solution of saccharides using a highly durable catalyst composed of ruthenium and nickel supported on activated charcoal, under hydrogen pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A sugar alcohol is prepared by heating an aqueous solution of saccharides using a catalyst composed of ruthenium and nickel supported on activated charcoal, under hydrogen pressure. The amount of nickel on the activated charcoal is 0.05W0.5pt.wt. per 1pt.wt. of ruthenium. The sugar alcohol obtained has a purity of as high as ≥99%. There is little isomerization, decomposition and polymerization of saccharide even by increasing the amount of catalyst in the catalytic hydrogenation of the saccharides.
