Abstract
PURPOSE:To raise the corrosion resistance and hardness of dinner knife by subjecting a stainless steel of austenite or precipitation-hardening series to a shot peening treatment. CONSTITUTION:A stainless steel of austenite or precipitation-hardening type, which is to be used for a knife, is subjected to a short peening process in which extremely small steel balls are blasted to the stainless steel, whereby a hardness enough to withstand uses as a knife for Europian style foods is provided for the knife. In addition, because higher compressive residual stress is generated in the surface portion of the knife by the shot peening against tensile residual stress existing in the knife by various processes including punching, forging, rolling, etc., the strength of the knife can be raised.
