Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve quality of product and yield in glass lubrication extrusion of a seamless Ti tube by using a copper plated mandrel and thereby preventing galling.
CONSTITUTION: A billet 3 is extruded from a gap between a mandrel 1 and a die 2 to form a tube 4. In extrusion, glass powder that is molten by heat of the billet is stuck on the inner and outer surface of the tillet 3. Further, a pad 5 made of semimolten glass powder is inserted between the front of the billet and the die 2. While the billet 3 is extruded by hollow stem 9, the pad 5 is molten successively and molten glass is supplied between the die 2 and the outer surface of the tube 4 to give good lubrication. However, only glass powder stuck at first is present inside, defective lubrication is liable to occur. Accordingly, relatively thick copper plating is made over the whole length of the surface of the mandrel 1 and let copper act as an auxiliary lubricant.
