Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain isochromane having a musky aroma industrially and advantageously, by adding sulfur or phosphorus chloride or oxychloride to a mixture of an arylalkanol with concentrated sulfuric acid and a compound capable of liberating formaldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, lower alkoxyl or lower alkyl, or form benzo, cyclopentano, cyclohexano, naphtho, etc. when R1 and R2 are at the 2- and 3- positions of the benzene ring; R3 is H or lower alkyl) is mixed with concentrated sulfuric acid and a compound capable of liberating formaldehyde. Sulfur or phosphorus chloride or oxychloride, e.g. phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus oxychloride, sulfuryl chloride, thionyl chloride or sulfur mono- to dichloride is added thereto, and the resultant mixture is reacted preferably at 30W70°C to give the compound of formula II in a quantitative yield in a short time through a simple procedure without using hydrogen chloride.
