Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound as finely divided particles with improved properties, by subjecting a propionate and pentaerythritol to ester exchange in the presence of a specific compound, followed by forming a molecular addition compound from the reaction product and an alcohol, purifying it by recrystallization.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I (R1 is methyl or ethyl) and pentaerythritol are subjected to ester exchange in the presence of a compound shown by the formula II (R2 and R3 are 1W6C lower alkyl) to give a reaction product, to which an alcohol, preferably 3W4C lower alcohol is added to give a molecule addition compound. It is recrystallized from methanol or ethanol to give the titled compound shown by the formula III as finely divided and colorless purified particles. 0.3W20Wt% based on compound shown by the formula I of the compound II is present. The compound shown by the formula III is obtained as high-quality white fine particles having improved properties, e.g. high bulk density, high flow properties, etc.
USE: An antioxidant for polyolefins.
