Abstract
PURPOSE: To omit a throttle valve and to reduce the pumping loss of an internal combustion engine, by providing a rotary valve at a portion in the intake pipe located near the intake valve, and controlling the intake-air flow by changing the phase difference of rotation of said rotary valve and a cam for driving the intake valve.
CONSTITUTION: A rotary valve 3 is disposed at a portion in the intake pipe 2 located near the intake valve 1. The rotary valve 3 is a cylinder formed with a bore and is turned in a cylindrical housing formed in the cylinder head 4 with a clearance of a fraction of 1mm to the inner wall surface of the cylindrical housing. Here, since the bore is opened and closed two times for each rotation of the rotary valve 3, the rotational speed of the rotary valve 3 is designed to be 1/2 of the rotational speed of a cam 5. The valve timing of the intake valve 1 is designed to be relatively wide. For instance, it is opened 20° before to top dead point and closed 60° after the bottom dead point in respect of the crank angle. The rotary valve 3 is connected to the cam 5 via a means for controlling the phase difference of rotation.
