Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an optical switch of low inversion electric field for the purpose of spontaneous polarization by using a crystal plate of Bi4Ti3O12 cut out at a specific cutting angle as an essential component, and selectively extracting polarized light according to the electric field directions to be applied to the crystal plate.
CONSTITUTION: The faces A, B of a single crystal plate 8 of Bi4Ti3O12 are made parallel to the axis (a) to provide inclination of 45° to the axes (b), (c). The faces C, D are made perpendicular to the cut faces A, B and are intersected with the axis (a) at 45°. The faces E, F are intersected orthogonally with the cut faces AWD, respectively. The direction of an electric field is controlled by entering the light 9 having the plane of polarization intersecting orthogonally with the faces A, B of the plate 8 of the Bi4Ti3O12 cut out in this way, in a direction assuming 45° to the axis (a) on the faces (b), (c), to the single crystal plate 8 and phase plate 10, whereby the phase differences of the two planes of polarization of the exit light is moved 180° and the planes of polarization are selected by using an analyzer 2. Thereby, the optical switch of a low inversion electric field for the purpose of spontaneous polarization is obtained.
