Abstract
Polarising prism for splitting up a non-polarised light beam into two mutual perpendicular and partially polarised beams, consisting in known manner of two partially birefringent prisms situated one behind the other and deflecting the beam in opposite directions, the refractory edges of the partial prism formed by their light entry and exit faces being mutually parallel, but incorporating the improvement whereby (a) the light exit face of the first partial prism, the optical axis of which extends parallel to the direction of its refracting edge and the light entry face of the second partial prism, following the first prism in the direction of the light, with its optical axis extending on the one hand perpendicular to the direction of its refracting edge, and on the other hand almost perpendicularly to the direction of propagation of the partial extraordinary beam in this partial prism, encloses an open wedge shape, and (b) the light exit face of the second partial prism is arranged in such a way as to integrally reflect the ordinary partial light beam of this prism, while in addition, (c) the entry of the non-polarised light beam into the first partial prism as well as the exit of the extraordinary partial beam of this partial prism is made at the Brewster angle. The partial prisms pref. consist of an artificial birefringent material esp.
