Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the electrode for generating hydrogen being excellent in corrosion resistance and mechanical strength and having low over-voltage of hydrogen generation over a long period by subjecting at least one of metal selected from Ni, Co and Ag to plasma melt injection onto a surface of a base material of Ni or a Ni alloy.
CONSTITUTION: After a surface of a plate comprising Ni or the Ni alloy is cleaned, said plate is subjected to the plasma melt injection by using Ar or He or a mixed gas with H2, N2 or the like as a plasma source and at least one of Ni, Co, Ag with an average particle size of 0.1W200μ to form a plasma melt injection layer with a thickness of 50μ or more. The resulting plate is used as a cathode in an aqueous NaOH solution to generate hydrogen by DC electrolysis. Said plate is excellent in crrosion resistance and mechanical strength as well as hydrogen generating potential is higher than -0.98gδVS. NHE and maintains stable capacity over a long period without generating electrodeposition and elution of Fe.
