Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the temperature gradient between the water-cooled portion and the noncooled portion for keeping the iron skin from deformation and break due to thermal stress by welding finny metal plates on upper and lower sides of a water- cooling pipe welded to the iron skin of the slag line portion of a converter.
CONSTITUTION: The iron skin in the slag line portion of a converter is forcibly cooled to prevent the impairable refractories inside the converter from damage. For this reason, the plural water-cooling pipes 1 are welded to places corresponding to the slag line of te iron skin 3. In this case, the finny metal plates 2 are at an interval by turning them to the vertical noncooling portions of the converter to the upper and lower stage pipes of the water-cooling pipe 1 and also the other ends of the metal plates 2 are welded to the iron skin 3. Thus, by the radiation of heat through the metal plates, the temperature gradient between the water-cooled portion and the noncooled portion can be reduced, thermal stress to be generated can be lessened, and the permanent deformation and break of the iron skin can therefore be prevented.
