Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable to detect extraordinary temperature rise of catalyst with high reliability, by detecting the temperature of catalyst through detection of infrared rays radiated from around a catalytic converter disposed in the exhaust system, and producing an alarm when the temperature of catalyst is raised extraordinarily. CONSTITUTION:In an engine 1 having a catalyst 3 in the exhaust manifold 2, an infrared-ray detector 5 is attached, by the intermediary of rubber, to the cylinder block of the engine 1 facing the catalyst 3. When the temperature of catalyst 3 is raised during operation of engine 1, the temperature of exhaust gas passed through the catalyst 3 is also raised and infrared rays are radiated from the surface of datalyst 3. The infrared rays thus radiated from the surface of catalyst 3 are detected by the detector 5 and the output of the detector 5 is given to a comparator 7 via an amplifier 6. Here, if it is judged by the comparator 7 that the temperature of catalyst 3 is raised extraordinarily, an alarm lamp 9 on the instrument board in the operator's cabin is lighted by an alarm lamp driving circuit 8.
