Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare in an aqueous solution of the titled reduction product useful as an assistant for pulp digestion, etc., by reducing anthraquinone with a low-cost hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst in a sufficient amount of alkaline aqueous solution to dissolve the reduction product.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of the titled reduction product (usually anthrahydroquinone) effective to accelerate the digestion of pulp, is prepared by reducing anthraquinone with economically available hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (especially a VIII group metal catalyst such as Pd, which may be supported on a carrier), in an alkaline aqueous solution containing an alkali (especially alkali hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide) in an amount sufficient to dissolve the produced reduction product, preferably 2 mole times the amount of anthraquinone, pref. at 30W90°C. The rate of reaction can be increased by adding an organic solvent which dissolves anthraquinone and is immiscible with water, to the reaction system.
