Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The sesquiterpene compound of formula I.
USE: A synthetic intermediate of a fungicide. Useful for the total synthesis of a natural substance, cinnamosmolide, having fungicidal activity against cutaneous fungi.
PROCESS: The sesquiterpene compound of formula I can be prepared almost quantitatively, by oxidizing an alcohol of formula II with an oxidizing agent, pref. Jones reagent, in acetone at room temperature for about 1W2hr. The compound of formula II can be obtained via several steps, from 8-hydroxymethyl carbonate of formula III derived from isodrimenin.
