Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an organic bromide useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, in high purity and yield, stably, by brominating an unsaturated organic compound in the presence of a hydrogen halide solution under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An organic bromine compound is prepared by brominating an unsaturated organic compound (e.g. methyl 3-pentenoate, n-butyl methacrylate, etc.) in the presence of a solution of a hydrogen halide (e.g. hydrobromic acid). The reaction temperature is ≤150°C, and lower the better. When the bromination is carried out with bromine dissolved in the hydrogen halide solution, the side reactions can be suppressed because the bromine forms a complex having lower activity and acts as a homogeneous system. The hydrogen halide solution can be recovered and reused.
