Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the contamination of the stock for optical fiber with impurities, by providing a soot-protecting chamber in a protecting vessel for the preparation of the stock by the vapor-phase axial deposition method, and filling the soot- protecting chamber with inert gas or a nonreducing gas at a pressure higher than the exterior pressure. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of the stock for optical fiber by the vapor-phase axial deposition method which comprises the flame hydrolysis of the raw material of glass and a raw material for the control of refractive index in a protecting vessel 12 with an oxyhydrogen flame 14 to effect the deposition and growth of soot to one end of a supporting rod 13, while pulling up the supporting rod 13 so as to keep the distance between the oxyhydrogen flame 14 and the growing part of the soot 20 constant, a soot-protecting chamber 17 is placed in the protecting vessel 12 to protect the soot 19. The soot-protecting chamber 17 is filled with inert gas or nonreducing gas at a pressure equal to or higher than the exterior pressure of prevent the contamiation of the optical fiber stock with impurities.
