Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a generation of cracks in the end face of the roll drum, by applying a local heating to the roll in order to improve the wear resistance of a part which allows to contact with the inner race or the bearing. CONSTITUTION:Alocal heating is applied to a rolling roll, especially a collarless rolling roll, by heating its local part, which allows to contact with the inner race or the bearing, with a heat source of a good heat focusing property, like as laser, electric discharge, ion beam and electron beam. For example, the quench hardened part 5 is obtained by heating with five laser beams. This hardened part has an area merely several percentage of the contact area, however, it has an extremely superior wear resistance so that is hardly suffers from the wear troubles; besides, since the locally hardened part is guarded by the surrounding soft and tenacious basic structure, any crack does not generate nor grow further.
