Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:p-Hydroxyphenylglycine o-toluenesulfonate.
USE: A salt undergoing preferential crystallization to give optical active p-hydroxyphenylglycine useful as a raw material for a semisynthetic penicillin derivative and a semisynthetic cephalosporin derivative. The salt has properties necessary for optical resolution, racemic modification being more soluble than the optical active compound, the super saturated state of the optical compound being stable, etc.
PROCESS: Free-hydroxyphenylglycine is neutralized with o-toluenesulfonic acid in a solvent, and the neutralized compound is crystallized by conventional means, e.g., concentration, cooling, etc. to give DL-p-hydroxyphenylglycine o-toluenesulfonate.
