Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a gasket which can withstand long-term service at an elevated temperature, consisting of a prepreg obtd. by impregnating an inorg. or an org, (non)woven fabric with a thermosetting resin.
CONSTITUTION: A base material consisting of a woven fabric or a nonwoven fabric of an inorg. fiber (e.g. an asbestos fiber or a glass fiber) or an org. fiber (e.g. a nylon fiber or a cotton fiber), is impregnated with a thermosetting resin (e.g. an epoxy resin or a phenolic resin) to obtain a prepreg. The prepreg sheet is cut to a desired shape to obtain a gasket. The gasket with the desired shape is coated with an org. solvent (e.g. acetone) to make the thermosetting resin impregnated tackey. Then the gasket is set on the bonding surface of an apparatus or a pipe and assembled by utilizing the tackiness of the thermosetting resin. Alternatively, the gasket is irradiated with infrared rays to soften the thermosetting resin. Then the gasket is set on the bonding surface of the apparatus or the pipe and assembled by clamping it. The thermosetting resin of the assembled gasket is cured by raising the temperature of the apparatus or the pipe or by the temperature rise thereof when used. The bonded surface is stable, keeps airtightness and prevents the leakage of air at an elevated temperature over a long period of time.
