Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an emulsion polymer, which gives stable and excellent coat, by the emulsion polymerization of a radical polymerizable monomer, in a hydrosol obtained by the emulsion polymerization of an acid monomer mixture in the presence of a small amount of an emulsifier, followed by neutralization with an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: An emulsion polymer is obtained by the emulsion polymerization of a radical polymerizable monomer, in a hydrosol obtained by the emulsion polymerization of a mixture of radical polymerizable monomers of acid value 30W150, in the presence of 0.3wt%, based on the mixture, of an emulsifier, followed by neutralization with an alkali, by use of such amounts of hydrosol that the wt% ratio of solids in the hydrosol to the radical polymerizable monomer, is 10W80:90W20. The polymerization is carried out by adjusting solid concentration in the hydrosol to be 10W40wt%, according to the solid content required for the ultimate emulsion polymer, and by adding, continuously or intermittently, a polymerization initiator and the radical polymerizable monomer. The polymerization temperature is preferably 30W95°C.
