Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a device of simple circuit constitution with high processing speed by providing a multistage constitution memory that is accessed by regarding extracted feature data as an address and by storing category information for a pattern to be recognized in its final-stage memory.
CONSTITUTION: On the basis of a video signal, features of a pattern to be recognized are extracted and on the basis of the features, recognizing circuit part 6 determines the category of the pattern to be recognized unconditionally. This recognizing circuit part 6 is provided with a multistage constitution memory consisting of stages of memories accessed by using as its address feature data that corresponds to said extracted features and in the final-stage memory, category information for the pattern to be recognized is stored. For example, data x1Wx7 expressing the features of the pattern are used as address information to access ROM7 of recognizing circuit part 6 and a category stored as a solution at each address position is read out.
