Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain high purity terephthalic acid, useful for the direct polymerization of polyester which is material of fibers etc., by carrying out the catalytic hydrogenation of crude terephthalic acid obtained by the liquid phase oxidation of p-dialkylbenzene, twice.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of crude terephthalic acid containing impurities such as 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (hereafter abbreviated 4 CBA) and obtained by the liquid phase oxidation of p-dialkylbenzene, is subjected to the hydrogenation twice at high temp. and pressure in the presence of a catalyst of VIII group noble metal to give a high purity terephthalic acid. The total amount of hydrogen used is 2.0W20 times mole of 4 CBA contained in the aqueous solution of the crude terephthalic acid. Hydrogen used in the first hydrogenation is 0.35W1.95 times mole of the above 4 CBA, and hydrogen is supplemented in the subsequent hydrogenation. When the amount of hydrogen in the first hydrogenation is out of the range mentioned above, the activity of the catalyst is rapidly deteriorated and the catalytic life is shortened to lower the qualities the terephthalic acid.
