Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose a high polymer safely and efficiently at low cost, by the action of NH3 and O2 on the polymer in the liquid phase.
CONSTITUTION: A high polymer in the liquid phase, e.g. a solution comprising polystyrene, a solvent, and a catalyst, preferably a metal salt of a fatty acid and a bromide, is contained in a reaction vessel. The air in the vessel is replaced by a mixture of NH3 and O2, which is reacted with the polymer under heating at normal pressure. Polystyrene is decomposed at a high degree of decomposition to separate the product readily. The chain combination of the polystyrene is oxidized and severed with O2, and reacted with NH3 to form ammonium benzoate, which is dehydrated to give benzamide. The benzamide is partly dehydrated to form benzonitrile reusable as a solvent.
