Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the easy formation of the filter and obtain high dewatering capacity by coiling the fiber aggregate having water-swellable fibers composed of the specific components in a middle cylinder pierced with a plurality of holes and forming the same into a cylindrical shape.
CONSTITUTION: The water-swellable fibers are obtained by forming at least part of the outside layer portions of fibers by a hydrophilic crosslinked polymer (hydrogel) and the rest by an acrylonitrile-base polymer (hereinafter referred to as AN-base polymer) and/or other polymer. The fiber aggregate containing said water-swellable fibers is coiled in a middle cylinder pierced with a plurality of holes and this is then formed to a cylindrical shape, whereby the intended filter is made. As a hydrogellation process, an aqueous solution of a high-concentration alkaline metal hydroxide of ≥60mol/1,000g soln. is acted in the AN-base fibers, the fiber aggregate contg. the AN-base fibers or the filter composed of said fiber aggregate. The ratio between the diameter and height of the cylinder is generally 1:0.5W20 and the density of coiling is preferably 0.1W0.6g/cm3.
