Abstract

PURPOSE: Melt spun synthetic fibers having improved water and moisture absorption, comprising specific depressions and micropores over the fiber cross-sections.
CONSTITUTION: Synthetic fibers wherein at least 80% of the cross-sections have depressions formed by the slots 1 and/or the arms 2 in the fiber direction, and the angular aperture θ of the depressions is -180° to 45°. The opening parts of the depressions are not engaged with each other when the fibers are brought into contact, and R of the formula R=(Perimetrical length of the fiber cross-section)2/ cross-sectional area of fiber is ≥50. Micropores are uniformly distributed over the fiber cross-sections, oriented in the fiber axis direction, and at least partly communicated. The resulting fibers have effective capillaries in and between fibers, and excellent water and moisture absorption due to the uniform micropores.
