Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a lack-of-fill phenomenon in a welded bead portion after coating by a method wherein the thickness of a semifused plastic belt-shaped material is locally increased by means of a film thickness adjusting device installed between an extruder and a metal pipe to cover the welded bead portion with the plastic material. CONSTITUTION:When coating a steel pipe 5, having a welded head 7 on its external surface, being transferred in an axial direction while it is being rotated, with a semifused belt-shaped plastic body 2 extruded from an extruder 1 by winding the plastic body spirally, the semifused belt-shaped plastic body for coating the welded bead 7 is locally made thicker using a film thickness adjuster 3 properly installed between the extruder 1 and the steel pipe 5. In order to make the plastic body thicker, the welded bead is detected by a bead detector 9 installed ahead of a rotating portion 11 to be coated with (the position by the same distance as that between the rotating portion 11 and the film thickness adjuster 3), and the cylinder 8 of the film thickness adjuster 3 is operated by a detected signal via a controller 10 to elevate an upper roller 4 by the specified amount.
