Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a nonwoven fabriclike activated carbon fiber aggregate by continuously oxidizing nonwoven fabriclike aggregate consisting of an activated carbon fiber aggregate and acrylonitrile fiber followed by activation.
CONSTITUTION: When a nonwoven fabriclike aggregate made of acrylonitrile fiber is continuously oxidized and activated, the former-stage oxidation is carried out while adjusting tension Y in the coiling direction to the range of equations I until the amount of oxygen bonded becomes 35% of the amount of satd. oxygen to be bonded to the fiber, and the latter-stage oxidation is carried out while holding tension Y' in the coiling direction in the range of equations II until the amount of oxygen reaches 60W90% of the amount of satd. oxygen. The oxidation is carried out in air at 200W400°C for about 0.5W20hr. The resulting flame resistant aggregate is then activated with an activating gas of 700W1,000°C under 0.002W2kg/cm2 pressure. Steam is used as the activating gas, and nitrogen gas, etc. may be mixed into steam. Thus, a nonwoven fabriclike activated carbon fiber aggregate contg. 3W15% nitrogen and having 0.04W0.15g/cm2 bulk density is obtd.
