Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent water intrusion into a motor unit in an underwater pump by a method wherein an air reserving chamber is provided between the motor unit and a pump casing.
CONSTITUTION: When a water level in a tank is at a lower limit WL and a pump is in a stopped condition, air is flowed into an air reserving chamber 1 from a vent hole 8, however, even if the tank is flooded and the water level is exceeded an upper rim 8e of an opening section of the vent hole 8, the air in the air reserving chamber 1 is accumulated and stored without running off the chamber and an air reservoir is formed. Accordingly, an axial seal mechanism 9' and a sliding part 9 thereof are isolated from external liquid by the air reservoir at all times and this air reservoir becomes an air cushion thereby protecting the axial seal mechanism 9' and the sliding part 9 thereof. Thus, even if this pump is utilized for lifting dirty water containing sludge or waste water from a factory or the like having strong corrosive properties, these liquid will never cause abrasion of said sliding surface or corrosion of the axial seal mechanism 9' by invading into the sliding part 9 of the seal. Submersion into a motor unit 2 along the sliding part 9 of the seal will also never be caused.
