Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively remove Ca alone in molten Al or its alloy as a Ca-boron compound by adding a free boron generating boron source to the molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: To molten Al or its alloy is added a boron source generating free boron in the molten metal, and they are agitated to attain uniform dispersion and reaction. As the boron source an Al-B mother alloy, NaBF4, NaBH4, BF2, KBF4, H2BO3, HBO2, MgB2 or the like is used. These boron sources form a calcium-boron compound in the molten metal. The compound settles to the bottom of the molten metal and can be removed easily since the specific gravity is higher than that of Al or its alloy.
