Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of coding and to make the capacity of storage device small, by automatically discriminating the two-tone expressing region in mixed documents and multitone expressing region for the different tone expressing region, and selecting the coding processing system corresponding to them. CONSTITUTION:A mixed document 1 is radiated with a light source 3, the reflected light is received with an image sensor 4, and the information of each scanning line is picked up as an analog signal 11. This picked up signal 11 is quantized to predetermined tone number N(N>=3) at an A/D converter 5. The video signal 12 quantized at the converter 5 is sequentially stored on the scanning line memory 6. Further, the video signal 12 is fed to a level counter 7, where the number of times of appearance of each level at tone number N level or a part of specific level is counted to discriminate the level value of each video element at a coding level number discriminator 8. Further, the video signal quantized is selected at the output of the discriminator 8 for the number of tone M(M>=2) of the coder 9 to be coded, and it is coded based on the value and stored in the storage device 10 to make the capacity small.
