Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain highly stable oleic acid, containing extremely little amount of polyunsaturated acid and almost colorless and odorless, by esterifying oleic acid with a lower alcohol, dissolving the ester in a nonpolar medium, and treating with a zeolite having a specific pore diameter.
CONSTITUTION: Oleic acid is esterified with a lower alcohol (e.g. methanol) and then dissolved in a nonpolar medium (e.g. n-hexane). The solution is treated with a zeolite having a pore diameter of 3W10Å (preferably 8W10Å) to adsorb and remove polyunsaturated acids, e.g. linolic acid and linolenic acid, colored substances and odorous components. Treatment is carried out as follows: The solution is filtered after adding the zeolite to the solution and stirring for 0.5W2hr, or the solution is passed through a layer of zeolite which is previously prepared. In case of the latter method, the solution may be passed through plural layers of zeolites to improve the efficiency.
