Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the element highly sensitive to methane without using any catalyst by using a sintered substance whose main constituent is cubic spinel formed of tin-zinc oxide or titanium-zinc oxide showing a specific formula.
CONSTITUTION: The sintered substance whose main constituent phase is the cubic spinel phase of M2Zn4-2XO4 (M is Ti or Sn, 0.75≤x≤1.25) is made to be gas- sensitive body. In contrast with the fact that existing sensors are not so sensitive to a stable gas such as methane as to hydrogen, butane and propane, the gas-detecting element thus constituted has a characteristic to be highly sensitive to methane, without using any precious metal catalyst liable to give bad influence on the change with time.
