Abstract
PURPOSE: To polymerize phenols continuously, in a short reaction time, by counter- currently contacting a mixture of phenols, catalysts, and solvents with an oxygen- containing gas to effect the prepolymerization of the phenols, and then carrying out the deposition polymerization in a tank reactor.
CONSTITUTION: Phenols of formula (R1WR5 are H, hydrocarbon, halogen, etc.; X is H or alkali metal), e.g. o-cresol, and a catalyst such as cobalt-amine complex are mixed with a mixture of a good solvent of the objective polymer, e.g. toluene, and a nonsolvent, such as methanol. The resulted mixture is fed to a counter- currently contacting reactor through its top with a metering pump, and reacted with an oxygen-containing gas introduced from the bottom of the reactor, pref. at 30W 60°C to obtain a prepolymerized polyphenylene ether having an [η] of 0.05W0.2. The prepolymer is subjected to the deposition polymerization successively in the first tank reactor pref. at 25W50°C and then in the second tank reactor pref. at 10W30°C to obtain a polyphenylene ether.
