Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove multivalent cations efficiently, by treating an aqueous solution of multivalent cation-containing alkaline metallic salt with a chelate resin by a multistage method.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of alkaline metallic salt (NaCl, KCl, etc.) containing a total amount of Ca and Mg ingredients 1W20ppm is first passed through a layer of a chelate resin (e.g., a resin having an iminodiacetic acid functional group) having an exchange capacity (meg/l.resin) with a decrease of 20W 50% compared with the initial value so that almost all Ca and Mg are removed. The solution is then passed through a layer of a chelate resin having an exchange capacity about not less than 90% based on the initial value to give an aqueous solution of alkaline metallic salt having a total amount of Ca and Mg ingredients not more than 0.3ppm.
